I would like to take this opportunity to remind the populace of the combined largesse and award medallion competition to be held at Aethelmarc War Practice this weekend. All varieties of award medallions are encouraged, be they painted, metal, beaded, thread, or some other form. If your talents lend themselves more to largesse, whether scroll blank, trim, beads, or something completely different, as long as it is created by your hand, it is eligible for the competition. Following the competition all items will be donated to TRMs for dispersion as they see fit.

All entries should be brought to the A&S Pavilion between 9:00 and 11:00 AM on Saturday. The competition will be judged from 11:00 to 3:00 by populace vote with a token to go to the top three favorites. Looking forward to seeing what the artisans of our fine Kingdom bring forth!

Do not forget Coronation of Sven and Siobhan Hosted By: Shire of Heronter
Royal Progress:

It is said that the earth’s circle which the human race inhabits is torn across into many bights, so that great seas run into the land from the out-ocean. The northern part of AEthelmearc lies uninhabited on account of frost and cold, as likewise the southern parts of AEthelmearc are dry from the burning of the sun. In AEthelmearc are many great domains, and many races of men, and many kinds of languages. There are giants, and there are dwarfs, and there are also blue men, and there are any kinds of stranger creatures. There are huge wild beasts, and dreadful dragons.
As has been written in the sagas before them Their Highnesses, Sven and Siobhán invite you to join them and bear witness to Their ascension to the Sylvan throne. Come and be a part of the beginning of Their great saga as They begin Their rule the Sylvan land.
Their Coronation shall take place on April 21, 2018, at Camp Timbercrest, 11169 Moore Rd.,

AEthelmearc AEcademy and War College,

Greeting all and Happy Friday! Please know the Shire of Abhainn Ciach Ghlais will be hosting AEthelmearc Academy and War College on Saturday, June 16th. You are cordially invited and we hope you are able to attend. Further details are attached.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1581526938549565/

The Shire of Abhainn Ciach Ghlais welcomes you to attend the AEthelmearc Academy and War College.

There are many ways to "up"; our game: adorning a garment with intricate embroidery, embellishing a tale, adding flourish to a calligraphed signature, or garnishing a tasty dish ….

If you've been wanting to add a “little extra” -- to your clothing, your kit, your craft, or your camp – plan to attend AEthelmearc AEcademy and War College, hosted on Saturday, June 16,
2018, by the Shire of Abhainn Ciach Ghlais.

Our theme "Adornments, Embellishments, Flourishes, and Garnishes," will provide you with the inspiration and know-how to kickstart that project or plan.

Teachers, we encourage you to offer classes that will inspire students to “kick it up a notch.”
To register to teach a class (or two!), go to: https://aecademy.net/registration/ .

Because we will be using TWO venues for this event, we will have plenty of space, indoors and out, to accommodate a wide range of classes, including the martial as well as peaceful arts.

Both venues, located within easy walking distance, will open at 9:00 AM.

Having two kitchens means that those wishing to teach hands-on cooking classes will be able to do so without interfering with lunch prep.

Venue #1 -- Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church (120 Main Street, Hughesville PA 17737) offers typical classrooms; it is accessible and has convenient parking but is not air-conditioned. Smoking, pets, alcohol, and open flames are not permitted in the church. This venue closes at 6:00 PM.

Venue #2 -- Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall (26 N Railroad St, Hughesville, PA 17737) -- gives us access to a large, flat open field that can accommodate any number of
fighters and fencers, with plenty of space for dayshades and pavilions.

The Social Hall has a large open room with a stage at one end. This venue is especially suited for multi-hour, messy classes. Brewers wishing to offer classes or organize ... See more

This is true for both next Saturday's Pittston parade and Scranton's parade a week beyond ...

Lords and Ladies:
(reprinted from last year... and the year before that.. and the year before that... and...)

Suggested Fencing Rules of Engagement: The Three-Mile Listfield (aka The Scranton St. Pat’s Parade) Sat. March 10th, 2018

1. Points don’t matter- play the spectacle, play to the crowd- be visually entertaining. Play to the photographers. enjoy yourselves!

2. As usual, we will be fighting heavy rapier only. Please feel free to bring out any form you are auth’d in. This is the perfect opportunity to bring out an interesting “shtick” parry. In fact- bring more than one form and swap forms throughout the parade… (RBG's are obviously not going to be used...) (wait a minute: do I still have the stage pistol that unfurls the banner that says "Bang!"... must remember to check...)

3. This is a melee situation: do not feel obligated to pair off: two on one, three on one, three on two… constantly varying sides- again- be visually interesting!

4. Death from behind is in effect- in as showy a form as possible- sneaking up on an opponent on tiptoe while “shh”-ing the crowd (a la Wile E. Coyote) is not only permitted but actively encouraged. (but don't overuse it...)

5. Big deaths! Bigger deaths! Biggest deaths of all! -staggering around with a sword-point stuck under an arm and dying in the arms of a fellow combatant or a crowd-member is just fine! But if you drop or knee to the ground dead, be ready to jump right back up and continue the advance.

6. To keep the squad in motion, let us keep leg shots to a minimum.

7. Pace yourself- take frequent breaks, keep hydrated. It’s always permitted to step out of the melee (to the side or behind) and pop a mask off, drink… or even just salute and wave to the crowd. (beverages will be available on the truck, feel free to ask for a bottle..)

A quick reminder from Don Po...

Lords and Ladies of the Swashbuckling Persuasion-
The Three-Mile Listfield is coming...
No Losing. No Winning. No "one-and-dones", No waiting in line for the next bearpit or listfield pairing...
Instead: The best, single opportunity for a cardio/stamina workout prior to Pennsic itself... A chance to fight any form (or forms), against multiple opponents and ham it up in the longest, free-form traveling game of "Resurrection Paranoia" ever held in front of an appreciative audience of several thousand spectators and parade participants- (plus television and radio!)
Saturday, March 10th , 2018 in Scranton, PA. with a post-revel/recuperation meal afterward...
Scranton's St. Pat's Parade is one of the top three largest parades in the country, as measured by participants per population of the city in which it's held*.
Their Excellencies cordially invite all Swashbucklers, Rattan fighters, walkers, wavers, banner carriers, line marshals, dog walkers, and others to join us for a day of spectacle and mirth! (Muster/parking/post-revel/ info shall forthcoming... Watch this space!)

The Scarlet Guard Inn Archery Festival VI Hosted By Shire of Hornwood

June 8, 2018 3PM – June 10, 2018 12PM
Location – The Eagle’s Nest
1050 Eagle’s Nest Road Brockway PA 15824
Join The Shire of Hornwood again this year for The Scarlet Guard Inn Archery Festival. This will be the 6th year that our Shire and the Scarlet Guard have teamed up to bring you the premier archery event of the year. Nowhere else in this great Kingdom of AEthelmearc will you find more archery in one location, and we daresay not even at Pennsic. As well as archery there is food, camping, music, games, campfires, and of course good friends.
Archery:
In addition to their spectacular and creative ranges and shoots, the Scarlet Guard has issued a challenge to all Shires, Baronies, and Cantons to send their best archer to compete. To enter an individual must have a signed letter of entry issued by their groups seneschal declaring you as their representative in the competition. They also ask the competitor to add a small item or token to the prize basket for the winner. In addition to the prize, the victor will walk away with the annual competition banner to display throughout the year. Each year the winner’s and group’s name will be added to the banner to create a legacy of great archery and ultimate bragging rights (members of the Scarlet Guard are not allowed to enter). If you have any questions regarding the challenge please e-mail the archery coordinator Juan Miguel Cezar at scarletguard_clerk@aethelmearc.org.
Trade Fair:
Hornwood invites merchants to set up their wares at no additional charge. In fact, anyone can be a merchant at the Hornwood Trade Fair. If you have SCA related items that you would like to try and sell or trade, feel free to add it to the Trade Fair. We have trustworthy volunteers to keep an eye on your wares while you are enjoying the event.
Classes:
There will be a variety of classes available on a variety of topics for varying skill levels, tentatively. ... See more

Kingdom of Aethelmearc

Per the request of our Baron and Baroness, please take a moment to read this item...

Citizens of AEthelmearc,

There has been a lot of unrest on social media with current events in the known world. We stand firmly behind the statements the Board of Directors have issued concerning hate speech and bullying. We have faith in the Seneschal of the SCA and the BOD in their investigation into the matter with the display of a symbol that represents terror, oppression, murder and hate. We are not naming the symbol because we don't want it linked to our Kingdom in web searches.

The dream is sometimes a fragile thing. We have to be deliberate in keeping it alive. If you have feelings that need expressed about this by all means write to the board of directors. They have invited comments be sent. (Comments@sca.org) Its ok to be upset, angry, mad, sad or a wide range of other emotions. We have certainly struggled through the roller coaster of emotions that is going along with this event. It is not ok to let this kill the dream or cause us to harm one another with words or deeds.

This event was the action of a few. It does not define who we are as the SCA. Don't give it that power. We as a society are so much bigger than this event.

A wise man once said “ whatever is good, whatever is just, whatever is kind if it shows any excellence at all, Think on these things”. When you are ready, look for what is good and true in our society, build the dream, share the stories that inspire you to greater things.
